Tbilisi's old town, with Sololaki as its most recognisable residential quarter, is a fabric of steep lanes and nineteenth-century houses with carved wooden balconies, above the Abanotubani sulphur baths and below Narikala fortress. Many buildings have needed restoration for decades, and rehabilitation projects sit alongside the everyday life of a neighbourhood that never stopped being lived in.
